Mansa Musa of Mali ranks number one all time with an approximate net worth of $400 billion in today’s dollars. That’s larger than the GNP of some countries. Unfortunately, his charitable donations on his way to Mecca devalued gold for quite a long while. It didn’t render his charity null and void, but it also didn’t help the northern half of the continent’s economy, either. It was just destabilizing enough for the economy to falter, leaving a gap for the Moroccans to eventually take over West Africa before falling to the Portuguese explorers.
