Personality Disorders and Treatments For Dummies

Posted on October 24, 2017

This project’ll be due on October 27th.  Check out the list of disorders in the DSM for some ideas – I have a copy of the DSM V in the classroom to help you.

With a partner, make a creative “Dummies” book that explores the following disorders (one from each category):

Anxiety disorders: generalized anxiety disorder, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder

Dissociative disorders: dissociative amnesia, dissociative fugue, dissociative identity disorder  (formerly multiple personality disorder)

Mood disorders: major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, manic disorder, dysthymic    disorder

Schizophrenia: paranoid, disorganized, catatonic, undifferentiated

Personality disorders: histrionic, narcissistic, borderline, antisocial, schizoid, paranoid,  obsessive-compulsive, avoidant, dependent

Somatoform disorders: conversion disorder, hypochondriasis, somatization disorder

Developmental disorders: autism, savant syndrome, AD/HD

For each disorder, you should include in your notebook:

* a cartoon or graphic representation of the disorder (be sure to cite any sources)

* an explanation of the characteristics of the disorder (including symptoms, behaviors, etc.)

* any biochemical or other explanations for the disorder (neurotransmitter, chemical, hereditary,   etc.)

* proposed treatment alternatives, including drug and therapy options (you must explain how the drug therapy works – does it work on neurotransmitters? If not, how does it work? You must also explore any therapy options that show promise in treating the disorder.)

* a movie or book that has dealt with this disorder

* famous (or not so famous) people who have struggled with the disorder

* a valid website that can offer more information about each disorder (usually not a .com suffix – .org or .edu are typically good sources)

Due Friday, October 27th
